M.D ANDERSON CANCER CENTER-THE CHAMPION

July 21, 2011 — The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center has once again snagged the top spot in U.S. News & World Report's 2011/12 ranking of the nation's top 50 hospitals for oncology.
For the fifth straight year, and the eighth time in the past decade, the renowned Houston-based facility has been named the nation's leading hospital for cancer care. Since the survey began in 1990, the center has consistently been named one of the top 2 hospitals for cancer in the country.

In addition to its number 1 slot, M.D. Anderson was also nationally ranked in 5 adult subspecialties: ear, nose, and throat (number 6); gynecology (number 6); urology (number 10); gastroenterology (number 22); and diabetes and endocrinology (number 28).
The 507-bed cancer facility had 22,564 admissions in the most recent year reported, and was rated as having a "very strong" reputation with specialists in oncology, the highest level of nurse staffing, and survival rates that are "much better than expected," according to the report. Last year, M.D. Anderson earned its third consecutive Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
In another U.S. News & World Report survey, M.D. Anderson's Children's Cancer Hospital was ranked number 15 in the nation.
The top 10 hospitals in the United States for oncology are:
  1. University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
  2. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City
  3. Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland
  4. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  5. Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center, Boston, Massachusetts
  6. University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, Washington
  7. Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts
  8. UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco, California
  9. Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
  10. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, California
The annual rankings are based on a mix of criteria that include key technologies, nurse-to-patient staffing ratios, patient safety, mortality rates, and the availability of patient services. U.S. News & World Report ranks hospitals in 16 different specialties, ranging from cancer to urology. In 2011, only 140 of the 4,825 hospitals that were evaluated performed well enough to rank in even 1 specialty.
There are nearly 900 hospitals listed in the cancer specialty, and a facility is included only if there are at least 254 inpatients in need of a high level of expertise, and who received treatment there in 2007, 2008, and 2009.
The top 50 hospitals for each specialty are ranked on the basis of a score derived from 4 elements: patient survival (32.5%), patient safety (5.0%), reputation (32.5%), and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services (30.0%)
The list of cancer hospitals is available on the U.S. News & World Report Web site. The full list of top hospitals by specialty is also available there, as was recently reported by Medscape Medical News.
