AVANT IS ALSO NEGATIVE

ZURICH (Reuters) Sep 20 - Roche Holding AG's cancer drug Avastin (bevacizumab) was dealt another blow when it failed to improve disease-free survival in early-stage colon cancer immediately after surgery.

The AVANT study in early-stage colon cancer had shown that standard chemotherapy plus one year of Avastin after surgery was not effective in reducing the risk of relapses.

Top-selling Avastin has stumbled at various hurdles this year and U.S. authorities are still reviewing the drug in breast cancer after an advisory panel advised the Food and Drug Administration to revoke its approval to treat the disease.

The FDA had been due to decide by Sept. 17 on two applications to expand Avastin's approved breast cancer uses to include combining it with other types of chemotherapy, but it postponed its decision until December.
